The 2014 Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships concluded on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, where the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps of Concord, California, finished their season with a resounding record high score to win the finals. The evening began with an exhibition by the Blue Devils “B” corps, who had won their 4th Open Class Championships last Monday, with tensions then mounting when the final 12 corps took the field as it was still up in the air as to where the top 5 after the semifinals — Blue Devils, Cadets, Bluecoats, Santa Clara Vanguard, and Carolina Crown — would finish both overall and in the captions.
The Blue Devils had completed the semifinals with a score of 98.95, distancing themselves from the 2nd place Cadets (96.7) and taking 1st place in every caption other than Percussion. As the finals got underway, Carolina Crown set the top 5 pace with a score of 95.675, and was followed by Santa Clara Vanguard (96.075), Cadets (96.875), Bluecoats (97.175), and the now 16-time world champion Blue Devils with a record finals score of 99.65.
This year’s championship week caps an epic season for the Blue Devils — the corps achieved the amazing feat of an undefeated season, set a new record DCI finals score, and captured Best Color Guard, Best Visual Performance, Best Brass Performance, and Best Overall General Effect, in addition to their “B” corps’ Open Class Championships win of last Monday.
